The National Pantheon, initially conceived as the Church of Santa Engrácia, holds a rich history dating back to the 17th century.

Its construction began in 1681 but took several centuries to complete, earning it the nickname “The Unfinished Church.” In the 20th century, it was repurposed as the National Pantheon, becoming the final resting place for prominent Portuguese personalities.

Visitors to the National Pantheon can explore its impressive architecture, which combines elements of Baroque and Neoclassical styles.

The design features a central dome that is a prominent element of Lisbon’s skyline.

The church’s interior showcases intricate detailing, including ornate sculptures, decorative tiles, and elegant marble work.

The dome, in particular, is a striking architectural feature, and its interior is adorned with a stunning fresco depicting scenes from the life of Santa Engrácia.

The interior houses the tombs of distinguished individuals such as Amália Rodrigues, Portugal’s renowned fado singer, and historical figures like Vasco da Gama.
