The Lisbon metro is an affordable and efficient way to get around Lisbon. This guide provides everything you need to know about riding the Lisbon metro system, including how to buy tickets, maps of the network, and tips for using the metro as a tourist.

Overview of Lisbon Metro

Lisbon’s metro system is operated by Metropolitano de Lisboa and it’s pretty straightforward because it has just 4 simple colour-coded lines: Blue (Linha Azul), Yellow (Linha Amarela), Green (Linha Verde), and Red (Linha Vermelha).

This lines cover the majority of Lisbon city centre as well as some of the surrounding suburbs making stops at important places like the historic centre, the airport, and popular beach areas.

Trains are pretty frequent, coming around every 6-12 minutes (less frequent on Sundays and holidays), and they run from early morning at 6.30 AM until 01:00 AM.

If you’re looking to visit some of the city’s top attractions like Belem Tower, Lisbon Zoo, or Jeronimos Monastery the metro is a quick and convenient way to get around.
