History of Lisbon Zoo

Lisbon Zoo, also known in Portugese as Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa, first opened in May 1884, making it one of the oldest zoos in the world. The initial location was in the Parque de São Sebastião da Pedreira, but it moved to its current location in Sete Rios in 1905 to provide more space for the animals.

From its inception, the zoo aimed to promote education and conservation, featuring a diverse range of species for visitors to observe and learn about. Over the years, the zoo has implemented modern facilities and habitats that mimic the animals’ natural environments to ensure their well-being.

The zoo offers many attractions including the famous dolphin show, which has been a staple attraction since the 1980s, a cable car that gives a bird’s eye view of the zoo, and various interactive experiences where visitors can get up close with some of the animals.

Today, the Lisbon Zoo continues to be a popular attraction for both locals and tourists, offering a fun and educational day out for the entire family.

What to see at Lisbon Zoo?

There is plenty to see and do at Lisbon Zoo with over 2000 animals and 300 species spread across the park.

To experience everything I would recommend spending a whole day at Lisbon zoo – you really won’t be getting bored, the zoo is massive!

Here are a selection of the must-see attractions:

Dolphin Show

The dolphin show is held 3 times daily (11am, 2:30pm and 4:30pm) in a small arena and lasts for roughly 20 minutes. I highly recommend checking this out – it’s educational as well as entertaining and I learnt a lot I didn’t know about dolphins and their conservation.

Reptile House

The reptile house is well worth a visit, housing rare reptiles from around the world in an intimate surrounding. The Komodo Dragon is probably the highlight, but you can also find pythons, iguanas and alligators. Also, make sure you check out the cute little Egyptian tortoise!

Cable Car

The cable car is one of the zoo’s most famous attractions, more like a theme park ride, the cable car goes around the zoo in a small metal cage (don’t worry, it’s super safe).

The full loop lasts around 20 minutes and gives you some really cool views of the park and the animals. If you’re looking for unique photos this is a great opportunity – try taking a photo of a giraffe from up high!

Be aware that on windy or rainy days the cable car is normally out of service.

Primates Temple

If you are looking to see some monkeys, Lisbon zoo is one of the best places in Europe. The temple is a fairly new addition to the zoo, and houses the many primates the zoo looks after.

There are chimpanzees, orangutangs, and gorillas all spread out in a beautifully large space with trees, lakes, waterfalls and vegetation. The whole setup mimics the monkey’s natural habitat and makes it one of the most modern primate facility in the world.

Tiger Valley

Lisbon Zoo has two species of tiger as of 2024, with a family of Siberian tigers and Sumatran tigers living in separate enclosures.

It’s a great place to educate yourself about tigers from around the world, with plenty of information boards, screens and interactive exhibits. There’s a real emphasis on preservation and conservation of these beautiful large cats, with a focus on how the threats and dangers they face in the wild.

Savana MEO

This area is brand new for 2024 and recreates the African savanna. You can view giraffes, hippos, elephants and many more.

For a full list of the animals and exhibitions currently on display check out the Lisbon Zoo official website.

Lisbon Zoo Location and How to Get There

You can easily get to Lisbon Zoo by taking the metro. The closest metro stop is Jardim Zoológico Station (on the blue metro line), which is then just a 2 minute walk to the zoo.

With regards to buses, you can take any of the following Carris buses (701, 755, 758, 768), and get off at Sete Rios, which is just a short walk to the zoo.

There is no tram stop close to zoo, but you can take the train and get off at the Sete Rios station (just 100m from Lisbon Zoo).
