Mercado da Ribeira – The History Behind Time Out Market

Mercado da Ribeira was officially inaugurated in 1882, but a devastating fire a decade later destroyed part of the structure. The damaged areas were rebuilt and expanded around 1902.

For decades, Mercado da Ribeira was Lisbon’s most important hub for their daily shopping. In the 1990s, the upper floor was adapted into a cultural space, and by 2001 the building included a restaurant and some artisan shops. However, despite these additions, the market eventually went into decline.

In 2010, Lisbon’s city council launched a concession to modernise the market, which was awarded to Time Out Lisboa magazine. Their vision was to curate the ‘best of the city under one roof‘, blending gourmet dining, traditional restaurants and cultural events. The result was the opening of Time Out Market Lisbon in May 2014, transforming part of the building into a food hall but keeping the traditional morning market on the ground floor.

By combining the historic Mercado da Ribeira with contemporary dining, Time Out Market has become one of the city’s most visited attractions.

Time Out Market Lisbon is located in the lively neighbourhood of Cais do Sodré, right on Avenida 24 de Julho. It’s very central and easy to reach using Lisbon’s public transport.

The metro is the most direct option, just take the Green Line to Cais do Sodré Station, which is just a 2-minute walk from the Time Out Market.
