Why do a Food Tour Lisbon?

Lisbon, and much of Portugal, is known for its vibrant food and drink scene. Known for its fresh dishes and relaxed atmosphere, it’s a major draw for visitors.

However, a common complaint about Lisbon is that some of the more traditional and local bars, which offer the best and most authentic food, can be a bit intimidating for visitors, especially if they are not familiar with the local language and culture.

I used to feel this way too. The fast pace and crowded nature of these bars often made me hesitant to visit them, unless I was accompanied by a local who knew the ropes.

A great way to overcome this is by joining a guided food tour with a local guide. The guide knows the best spots, how to order, and speaks Portuguese fluently.

They take care of everything for you – selecting dishes, ordering the food, and finding places to sit. This makes for a more relaxed experience, allowing you to try a variety of delicious dishes you might not have discovered on your own.

Additionally, these tours offer a social aspect. Whether you’re traveling alone or with others, it’s a great opportunity to meet new people and bond over a shared love of food.

What Happens on a Lisbon Food Tour?

During the tour you will visit roughly 5-6 different eateries, each offering a unique dish or food/drink item. The expert guide will give you information on the dish, as well as a history on how it fits in the Lisbon culture.

The locations you visit normally know of the tour coming, and they will have prepared unique dishes suited for tastings (as opposed to larger meals).

The locations will also reserve a space for the tour groups for you to sit so you’ll have a relaxing place to enjoy the food.

It can be a great way to identify possible locations for dinner or lunch the next day as well! Sometimes I’ve enjoyed the tasting on a tour, and made sure to visit again to try out the full menu!

Best Local Dishes in a Food Tour Lisbon

Food tours in Lisbon are all slightly different, but here are a few of the most common dishes available:

  • Caldo Verde – a traditional green soup made with kale, potatoes, and chorizo.
  • Bacalhau à Brás – a famous dish made with shredded salted cod, onions, and thinly chopped fried potatoes, all mixed in with scrambled eggs.
  • Cozido à Portuguesa – a stew featuring a variety of meats, sausages, and vegetables, slow-cooked so it melts in your mouth!
  • Bifana is another dish popular on the food tours, a juicy pork sandwich seasoned with garlic and spices.
